The word
'cosmetic dentistry' may seem like it includes a lot of procedures and such but
it is just the professional oral care that improves the appearance of your
smile, teeth and mouth. As per Dr. Kami Hoss, practicing
dentistry in San Diego area the crux of the
matter is that all procedures actually fall into five categories:
- Teeth Whitening: This is probably the most well known cosmetic dentistry procedure. Teeth’s whitening is recommended when teeth become yellow stained due to bad oral hygiene habits as well as due to the effects of one's lifestyle which includes the food taken and the drinks or medications consumed. Teeth whitening as a procedure can only take place once the dentist ensures that there is no tartar, plaque or other morsels/ debris stuck to the teeth. Pro tip: Teeth can be bleached to an even lighter color than that of the original teeth.
- Inlays and Onlays: Also known as indirect fillings, these treatments are done in case of mild to moderate tooth decays (or if insufficient tooth remains to fully support a filling done). The inlay is placed directly on the tooth's surface if no damage is done to the tooth cusps, but in case a major part of the tooth gets damaged then the layer is placed over the tooth's entire surface. Inlays and on lays provide support to the teeth, restore s it, strengthens it as well as prevents further decay.
- Dental Veneers: Applied using a dental adhesive and constructed from a medical grade ceramic, these have to be individually constructed for each patient so as to ensure that they match with a person's natural teeth. These are a solution for damaged and crooked teeth or for cracked enamel as well as for gaps in-between tooth.
- · Dental Implants: As the name implies, these are used to replace tooth's which got lost or damaged due to extraction, accident or other dental issues. Small titanium screws are placed into the jaw where the missing tooth is supposed to be and then when the screw bonds to the bone, it becomes support for a crown. The crown is then placed on the screw, which results in the jaw's bone and supporting tissues fusing to the implants, thus the implants fit us perfectly with the surrounding natural teeth. Care has to be taken by the patient to prevent food morsels or debris from accumulating in the area of implant.
- Composite Bonding: This is used to repair damaged, decayed, and aesthetically unattractive teeth by removing the decayed tooth and then applying the composite on the tooth's surface. The aim is to always use materials that resemble the color of the patient's tooth enamel. The composite is then carved by the dentist into an aesthetically pleasing shape and cured with a high intensity light. Compared to other procedures, bonding is pretty inexpensive.
The San Diego
based distinguished dentist Dr. Kami Hoss
recommends every patient to undertake prescription based dental medicine and
not across the counter for overall well-being.
