Bhojpuri
cinema is a testament to Bihari culture. It exudes richness and diversity and
for long, has been a major source of entertainment to the people to eastern UP,
Jharkhand, Bihar and Chhattisgarh.
The
first Bhojpuri film “Ganga Maiya Tohe Piyari Chadhaibo”, was made in 1961 and
since then, the industry has produced world class actors and artists. The
industry now produces more than 50 films per year.
Since
2000s, Bhojpuri films have earned unbelievable revenues at the box office. Some
of the highest earning Bhojpuri films are Sasura Bada Paisawala, Nirahua
Rickshawala. Slowly and steadily the budget as well as the quality of Bhojpuri
cinema improved tremendously, with many Bhojpuri films being well received at
national and international film festivals.
Bhojpuri
cinema is credited with giving actors like Ravi Kishan and Manoj Tiwary to the
world. Even high profile Bollywood actors such as Amitabh Bachchan, have acted
in numerous Bhojpuri films. Many films are made with a clean heart, with the
sole intent of providing a social message.
But
the past few years have seen the industry mired into waves of controversy. Most
of the films are accused of being sexist in nature, portraying women in a bad
light.
The
songs as well as videos coming out do not help the cause much. However the
actors and other artists are now openly condemning such incidences and it is
hoped that the situation will improve soon.
The
impact of this industry can largely be seen on the youth of Bihar and other
nearby states. It is the responsibility of Bhojpuri cinema to ensure that the
youth do not drive home the wrong message, and should work to educate and
inspire them.
